Helping Children Through a Divorce

One of the biggest worries divorcing parents have is how it will affect their children. Divorce is a difficult time for everyone, but it does not have to be traumatic for children if parents approach it in the right way. Here are a few things parents can do to try to smooth the experience for their children as they work toward a divorce resolution with an attorney like Raza Jones.

Remain Amicable

In some divorces, it is impossible for parents to cooperate with one another. There may be abuse issues or one parent might be concerned about a parental abduction. However, barring these types of situations, parents should work to cooperate with one another during a divorce for the sake of the children.

One of the reasons is that according to many studies, children adjust better when a divorce is more amicable. Another is that negotiating during divorce can help build skills parents will need after the divorce as they continue to negotiate raising their children.

Parents should remember that no matter how they feel about their ex-spouse, that person is the parent of their child, and most of the time, it is valuable for the child to maintain a relationship with both parents.

Talk and Listen

Children need space to express their emotions including anger and fear. Parents should reassure them that even negative emotions are okay and help guide them toward healthy ways of managing those emotions. Listening without judgement can also be a big help. Parents should also reassure children that they love them and that the divorce is not their fault.

Keep Them Away From Legal Issues

Unless there are special circumstances in which a judge requests it, parents should resist the urge to bring their children into a courtroom or to try to use the child against the other parent. Just as a judge will do, parents should aim to make decisions that are in the child’s best interests.
